The now famous Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse franchise got its start in Austin a few decades ago when they opened their doors off the drag on Guadalupe, their original location in the city. Now located on Sixth Street just off of Congress, the legendary steakhouse has set the bar for quality steakhouses in the Austin Area.
“Austin had never heard of prime steak until Ruth’s Chris showed up back in 1985,” says Sal Olivas, the General Manger of Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. Ruth’s Chris has been serving Austin USDA prime choice beef complete with family style side orders and a long list of wines to choose from since its doors opened in 1985. The franchise has seen enormous growth over the years and has established itself as the world’s largest fine dining company.
Ruth’s Chris was started by Ruth Fertel over 40 years ago. Ruth, a precocious child, enrolled at LSU at an early age and graduated with degrees in Physics and Chemistry. She used that schooling to devise cooking techniques that would provide the best possible steak for her customers.
One of Ruth’s ideas that is still in practice at the steakhouse today is the 500-degree sizzling plate: a concept created to ensure that the last bite of steak is as hot as the first. This technique provides a unique experience, producing one of the most tender and flavorful cuts of meat in the world.
A great steakhouse is not just about good steaks but also about great customer service. And Ruth’s Chris delivers just that. A highly trained staff keeps the quality of experience at Ruth’s Chris on the highest of levels bringing all aspects of a great steakhouse together as one. General Manager Sal Olivas wouldn’t have it any other way. “I want our guests to know they had the best possible USDA prime choice beef they can have in America along with great personal service that you can’t normally get in a lot of restaurants.”
